Books - Rise

Rise

by Kim Lakin

Kim Lakin-Smith's previous novel for NewCon Press, Cyber Circus, was justifiably short-listed for several awards. We are delighted to now be publishing her latest, Rise, which represents surely her finest work to date.

“Tolerance is an act of humanity, which we must nurture and
enact each in our own lives every day, to rejoice in the diversity
that makes us strong and the values that bring us together.”
– UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay

Now is the time to act, to throw off the shackles of oppression and
RISE!

Denounced by her own father and charged with crimes against the state, Kali Titian – pilot, soldier, and engineer – is sentenced to Abbandon prison camp, where she must somehow survive among her fellow inmates the Vary, a race she has been raised to consider sub-human; a race facing genocide; a race who until recently she was routinely murdering to order.

In Abbandon she encounters Mohab, the Speaker’s son, and stumbles upon two ancient energy sources which may just bring redemption to an oppressed people.

A story told from the heart, a book released to coincide with the UN’s International Day of Tolerance (November 16th); Rise is a potent tale of courage against the odds and the power of hope in the face of racial intolerance.

“A searing portrayal of redemption and compassion in the face of prejudice and brutality. Kim Lakin-Smith is one hell of a damn fine writer.” Gareth L. Powell, author of Embers of War

"Powerful and heartfelt, Rise demonstrates the ease with which humanity can be led to demonise those viewed as 'other'." The Guardian

"Rise has much to say about our fractured, intolerant age."– The Financial Times

"A powerful story set in a Nazi-like state of the future. There is some beautiful writing about what it feels like to be a non-person, entirely in the power of people who hate you. Lakin-Smith is also interesting on people whose humanity has been twisted and compromised by the distortions of the culture in which they live, a culture which requires them to deny the evidence of their own eyes. Yet Rise is not without hope. Humanity persists in spite of everything." – Chris Beckett, Arthur C. Clarke Award winning author of Dark Eden

"With an underlying sense of nostalgia for the multicultural ambience of the Trekkie universe, Rise delivers a claustrophobic tale with the power of Atwood and Orwell." – Aurealis Magazine

"Brilliant. Handmaid’s Tale meets the Holocaust. I heartily recommend Rise." – Geoff Nelder

"Rise is the kind of science fiction that everyone should be reading right now. We need reminders like this, we need to know that good people make a difference. This is Lakin-Smith at her very best."  – Neil Williamson, author of The Moon King
