George Gissing

George Robert Gissing (22 November 1857 – 28 December 1903) was an English novelist who published 23 novels between 1880 and 1903. Gissing’s early life was mired in controversy after he was found guilty of stealing from fellow students at Owens College (forerunner if Manchester University), purportedly to support a young woman he was besotted with. Following a month’s hard labour in Belle Vue Gaol, he travelled to the USA before returning to settle in London. Here he earned a living as a tutor and writer, his literary efforts gaining considerable acclaim – George Orwell numbering among his admirers.
