Liz Williams

(also Artist)

Liz Williams is an acclaimed British science fiction writer whose work is known for its intellectual depth, imaginative range, and sustained engagement with belief systems, culture, and the limits of rational thought. Born in 1965, Liz is the daughter of a conjuror and a Gothic novelist — a background that perhaps helps explain the distinctive way her fiction brings together intellectual rigour and spiritual imagination.

She holds a degree combining Artificial Intelligence and philosophy, followed by a PhD in the philosophy of science from the University of Cambridge. Before becoming a full-time writer, Liz worked in IT and spent time teaching English overseas, experiences that form part of a notably varied professional life.

Alongside her fiction, Liz is an active figure within contemporary Pagan and Druidic communities. She lives in Glastonbury, Somerset, and for many years co-ran a witchcraft supply shop — an experience documented in her popular two-volume work 'Diary of a Witchcraft Shop' (NewCon Press). Liz has written for The Guardian as an expert on Paganism, offering informed commentary on Pagan belief, ritual practice, and contemporary spiritual life grounded in lived experience. She has conducted hundreds of handfasting ceremonies and written widely on Pagan history and practice.

Four of her novels have been shortlisted for the Philip K. Dick Award, several have appeared on The New York Times ‘Best of Year’ lists, and her novel 'Banner of Souls' was shortlisted for the Arthur C. Clarke Award in 2006. Her short fiction has appeared in Asimov’s, Interzone, The Third Alternative, and Realms of Fantasy.

With NewCon Press, Liz has published a substantial body of work, including the novella 'Phosphorus', collections 'A Glass of Shadow', 'The Light Warden' and 'Back Through the Flaming Door', and the highly successful Fallow Sisters quartet — 'Comet Weather', 'Blackthorn Winter', 'Embertide', and 'Salt on the Midnight Fire'. Her latest is 'The Ice Princess', a work of non-fiction .
